Secret #1: Melt More Chocolate Than Needed

If you’re a beginner and that’s your first try of making your own hot chocolate bombs, it’s really important to be prepared for the worst, right?

Exactly, as with everything else you’re doing for the first time in life.

That’s why the first secret of ensuring your success with making Hot Chocolate Bombs is to prepare a couple of extra cups filled with melted chocolate chips.

That way, if you have a couple of spheres that don’t turn out well, you can always practice and make more.

To make things easier you should really consider your first time as a practice run so that you don’t end up disappointed.

Secret #2: Heating And Cooling The Chocolate

Again if it’s your first try making hot chocolate bombs as I’ve discussed in this article, a lot of people tend to overheat the chocolate and it turns out like this nasty terribly looking substance that you can’t do anything with…

Luckily you don’t have to end up there!

What’s important when melting the chocolate chips is that you do it in short timeframes.

For example when you put the chocolate chips in the microwave, just heat it for 10-15 seconds at a time and check how it looks. (use a double-boiler if you have one)

If it’s in a homogeneous mild texture, then you’re good to go. 

The next thing to remember when the hot chocolate is already in the molds is to make sure that it has the time to really set up while in the refrigerator.

Because if it remains soft (at all) it could easily stretch and break which is something that you want to avoid!

You don’t want to waste your time, right?

Secret #3: Make Sure To Fill In The Weak Spots

Remember Secret #1 where I asked you to prepare more chocolate than needed?

That’s where it will come in handy.

When you cool the chocolate molds down and take them out of the refrigerator I want to examine how they look.

Before you take the chocolate cups out the mold, examine carefully if there are still some thin areas in the chocolate mold and if you find some.

Then just melt a little bit more of the extra chocolate and fill the weak spots.

You can use a tablespoon to that and make sure that the surface from the inside looks thick enough so that it doesn’t break.


Now, just put the mold back in the refrigerator to cool down and continue on your way.

It’s time for the last secret...

Secret #4: Perfectly Sealing The Hot Chocolate Bomb Sphere

Before I tell you how you can seal the hot chocolate bomb perfectly so that it’s round and shiny, I want to warn you that it’s possible for the chocolate to start softening if you hold it for too long in your hands.

That’s why we need to approach this situation strategically!

Here are the steps you need to follow to make perfectly-round Hot Chocolate Bomb Sphere:

  1. Heat a plate and lightly press one of the chocolate cups that you’ve just taken out of the mold
  2. Merge it with the other half that’s filled with the hot cocoa mix and the mini marshmallows
  3. Use a hot spoon to smooth out the center seam.

If you accidentally didn’t align the cup and your seam doesn’t match up perfectly, you can pipe a little extra chocolate along the seam to close in any gaps.

Then just Refrigerate to allow the seam to harden and again run a hot spoon around the seam to smooth it out.
